Hello Dieter!

Summary for everyone else: Dieter has a Maestro SE and connects here at
9600 EC/V42. My MR light goes mad, but more surprisingly, he managed to
make my system go mad last night.

Dieter, there is a bug in either the Spirit ROMs or the Rockwell code
(which the Maestro uses), which causes blocks to be sent twice (ie my modem
continually does error-correction). This problem only occurs with V42, so
if you force MNP4 on your modem, you will get fast throughput. Rod Speed
forces MNP4 on his modem for this reason. However, the problem does not
occur on EVERY V42 connect from a Rockwell-based modem. My guess is it
happens 70% of the time. I presume you intend calling my BBS regularly?
In which case, I would like to get some long-term stats on the problem. If
you continue to dial in with V42, I can look in my logs and see which ones
had an efficiency of about 56%, and which had an efficiency of about 112%.

Another thing that Dieter did was do a non-stop read of a message area
(using =), and then hang up part-way through the reading. This caused my
modem to go off-hook (ie the modem OH light was off), but Maximus didn't
know that he had hung up. I don't know if this problem is modem, os/2 or
maximus, but I couldn't reproduce it with my 1200 bps modem. Dieter
reproduced it though. The problem this caused is that Maximus was sending
and receiving data at a rapid rate, and causing my computer to beep. I
have put some sticky tape over the speaker, but it doesn't dampen the sound
much. I think it is likely to be OS/2 beeping to inform me that characters
have been missed (buffer overflow, that sort of thing). Anyone know how to
tell OS/2 to SHUT UP!

Since I can't reproduce the problem myself, could some of the rest of you
try reproducing it. When you have downloaded + uploaded your reply packet,
go to an area such as Windows (which you presumably don't read), read
message 1 (type in 1). Then type "=". Wait 30 seconds, then
hang up. Only do this between the hours of 8am to 10pm though! I can tell
that this happened by looking at the logs and see who reached the time
limit and had Maximus hang up on you. I can also tell (if I'm around) by
hearing my computer beep a lot! Thanks + bye.

Paul
