Just for short term 'testing', you could probably do away with the fan
altogether, and cut off the edge of the heatsink that overlaps the CPU
locking lever. It shouldn't overheat in the time it would take to learn
whether any particular MB will at least 'light up'. If you've got a real
slow booter, apply a damp cloth to the top of the heatsink to buy another
minute or two of time.
