Personally, I got stuck on IrcII and VeNoM many years back.... however VeNoM 
is no longer in production.... so I moved to LiCe.

In windows, I use mIRC and ircN ( www.ircn.org) nice script, with lots of 
features, (plugins, themes etc.) ... otherwise for Linux, BitchX is the way 
to go for a console based irc client...
