KB> It is not PARROTS, that has "gerochen" Deutschland - but
KB> Deutschland has "gerochen" PARROTS; because "gerochen" means
KB> "smelt", (and "reached" is "erreicht"). So much to that!
KB> Let me say thanks to YOU ALL for your interesting mails in this
KB> PARROTS!
KB> Besides: My BBS "Basis" is a typical Science Fiction Mailbox
KB> (Startrek, Perry Rhodan, ...), and it is just a wonder, that brave
KB> Sysop Heiko has put PARROTS between SF-message-areas! Hope he
KB> lets it there also in future...
KB> Well, in Europe there are about 5 German avian magazines, some
KB> Dutch and Danish magazines, TWO ENGLISH! ("Cage and Aviary Birds",
KB> London, and "Foreign Birds", Benson, GB)
KB> We here in Germany have a lot of bird keepers, but I think, they
KB> all have got no modems. I am the only one till now.
KB> That'll change soon. A 14400 fax-modem incl. software is now
KB> available for DM 159.- (= $ 86.)
KB> You asked about laws about parrots.
KB> Oh, there are a lot of laws about PET birds. Even the changing of
KB> the home (location) of a bird has to be written to the proper
KB> officials! Always with a paper called CITES.
KB> Parrots must be banded, of course. Some were chip-implanted.
KB> Even the smallest hobby breeding of parakeets needs certification.
KB> The asked procedure to reach this is as expensive as half a
KB> driver's licence. Endangered birds, as parrots usually are (except
KB> budgies and nymphicus hollandicus and some others), endangered
KB> birds are forbidden to sell for money! (Except if you have an
KB> "exception permission").
KB> In advertisements Germans do not "verkaufen" (sell) a bird, they
KB> "geben ab" (give away) the parrot without saying the expected
KB> price. (Although a price is paid at last...) All of that reason.
KB> e.g. Amazon youngs, (Bluefronted is the most bred amazon species
KB> here), cost about (converted) $ 1000, if they are tame.
KB> In PET shops, you see nearly no parrot; twenty years ago, they
KB> were full of them and much cheaper.
KB> - Kathy, that's it for today! Have a good time with yours.
KB> BTW: Do you know anyone in Grand Rapids, Mich.? I have got
KB> wonderful old colored postcards of that town to swap. Relatives
KB> emigrated there at the beginning of this century.
klaus I usually will not quote an entire message but yours is one of the most
interesting I have read and hope others will have a chance of reading it
again. Thank you for sharing the ways of your country. It is very
interesting. I have an african Grey 15 months old called Meggie. She is a
very sweet baby. She talks a little saying what sounds good to her. The
latest is calling my 2 year old grandson Robert. They share their breakfast
in the morning. I also have a male tiel that was an abused bird.
Please tell us more about birds in your country. Thank you for posting.
Diane
