subject: PHONE LINES

RS>I have the Zoom 56K internal and log on to a few bbs'. The maximum
RS>connect rate I get to a board using a USR 33.6 is 31.200. I think this
RS>is a limitation of my phone lines, not the modem.
RS>Does anyone know what it costs to upgrade the wiring in your house
RS>(average) from the old twisted pair (what I have) to newer stuff?
Before you go to the cost of rewireing the house try my work around.
Run a another twisted pair from your computer position to the Bell
entrance terminal. Disconnect the rest of the house from the entrance.
Connect the entrance pair to the new pair and run it directly to the
input jack on your modem. Use the original pair to connect from the
Modem output of your modem so the rest of the house wireing (that acts
as a big antenna for all the RFI generated in your house environment 8-(
My USR Sportser modem in my 486 automatically disconnects the modem
output jack when the modem is on-line and reconnects it all when the
modem drops the line.
Unfortunately the Digitan 33.6k modem in my H-P 7280P 166mHz does not
automatically disconnect the output jack when I am on-line, so I have
to do it physically at a wall terminal (and hope I remember to always
reconnect when I am finished, which isn't always the case until my XYL
hollers to reconnect so she can get on-line with her 200 nHzer 8-)
In any case it always increases my throughput 100%
I would greatly appreciate if you would inform me if the Zoom
automatically disconnects the output jack when on-line please.
Ciao, Ack.
