The _total_ link from your modem to the remote modem isn't providing enough
bandwidth or signal to noise ratio for full 28k8 connects.  Go into terminal
mode call the troublesome Sportster, when the characters stop type +++
When you get the OK back type AT%L%Q  you'll get two figures back.  Drop me
(or post in ZOOM for z1) the results?  Also include your ati3i6 readout as
your V.FC rom might be downlevel too

Probably nothing since both your and the remote's modems work fine to
other systems.  In London, to a few systems, can't get more than 24k or 26k4
(notably inner London across the Thames)  Others, even into Europe or the
US give 28k8 everytime.  Yes, they're running Couriers...
