there may be stuff in the water he's adding. This can be especially
problematic if you've got city water.
One of the standards for me is to always let the "new" water stand for a
week or so before it goes into the tank. I've got a bunch of those 5 galon
water jugs that spring water comes in, and I just fill them from the hose. I
run an air line (no airstone, just tehnd of the line) into the jug, and let
it sit and bubble for a week before it goes into the tank. I've found that
the Chlorine products all seem to go away (at least according to my test
kits), and there seems otb e much less of a shock to the tank when I put it
in.... This also gives anything that was inthe tap water a chance to bloom
(and be found) before it gets into my tanks...
