If you allow for exceptions then you no longer have a
Zero Tolerance program. You have a 0.0001 Tolerance
program.
I fought a quick hard battle with my local school. My
daughter is asthmatic and needs to have her inhaler
with her at all times. The school told me that she
would have to keep it in the office. I asked them what
would happen if she was out of the playground and went
into an attack? They told me she'd have to jump though
hoops before she could leave the playground to get her
inhaler. I told them that was not acceptable and I
wanted her to have it ON HER PERSON at all times. They
told me that allowing students to carry DRUGS was
against the rules.
After a couple of nice tries of trying to explain
things to them I gave up. I informed them that if my
daughter was not allowed to carry it with her and she
had an attack at school that required me to take her to
a doctor they, every one from the school board members
to the principal, would find themselves defendants in
one he!! of a law suit and if I didn't wind up owning
everything they had they would have to sell it to pay
their legal fees. The next day I was informed that
they were going to make an exception for my daughter.
The next year the school board changed the policy so a
kid could carry MEDICATION on their person if the
school had a letter from a doctor saying it was
necessary.
