Congratulations, Rob, you just learned a basic fact about plants.
Light is food to them - no light, and they starve to death over a
period of time. My much-neglected AV's sit on wide windowsills to
catch as much light as possible for much of the year. Only in summer
do I have to shade the west window where I keep most of them. And only
in summer would they thrive in a north window. Most do well in east
and west windows. My south windows are for real light-lubbers , but
could be used for 2-3 months in the winter for AV's before the sun got
too powerful.
