On OS/2 and eCS your setup.cmd should show like
route -fh
arp -f
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
ifconfig lan0 192.168.1.15 netmask 255.255.255.0 metric 0 mtu 1500
route add default 192.168.1.1
ipgate off
resolv2 is the configuration of your local nameserver. When it is not
empty yet: no change is needed. You would need the IPs in to set the
nameserver information in windows to the same.
ifconfig lo ... is the loopback device
on each mashine the same
ifconfig lan0 ... defines the mashine setup.cmd is on.
different on each mashine
The route statements says where the router is.
On each mashine the same
This says here that your router is at IP 192.168.1.1, so you have to
setup the router to hold that IP in your LAN, your local end of the
routing, NAT or whereever the router asks for its own static IP.
Switch OFF DHCP on your router.
On windows the network settings are on different location, in
different dialogs depending on the Version.
In general: System -> Network
WINS: OFF
dynamic IP, DNS or how ever the version names that: OFF
static IP (or however the version names that: 192.168.1.y
This IP has to be different in each mashine
When you have multiboot setup you can use the same IP on that mashine
anyway.
routing: fill in the IPs of the nameservers of your ISP and/or other
nameservers you knows of. You can give up to 3.
General comments:
IPs are 4 digits, separated with '.'
192.168.x.y is the general form of an IP defining a local net as yours.
x is a digit defining your local net (yes, you can have more than
one). When you have only one local net (most common usage) this digit
must be identical on each mashine. The range is 0 - 255.
Most common is 1 or 0 on this digit. But it must be identical on each
computer on the same net.
y is the ID of an individual mashine. It must be different from each
other in the net. The range is 0 - 255.
y = 0: is reserved and can't be used as IP for a computer
y = 255; is reserved and can't be used as IP for a computer
netmask
is a mask that defines the bits the net address occupies in the IP.
Beginning with the most significant bit in binary
1111.1111.1111.0000
the same in decimal
255.255.255.0
All bits set in sequence says that they are defining the network,
The IP gets anded with the mask to separate the net address from the
mashine address. The masdhine address occupies all bits set to 0 in
the mask. Whereas the firt 0 in the mask ends the net.
Most common for a net like yours is netmask 255.255.255.0 leaving 4
bits = 1 digit = 254 different computers. As sayed above 0 and 255
rerserved.
There is no need to number all computers from 1 to 255 in sequence. It
is common practise to give the router the number 1 but any other is
possible too so long it differs from each other in the net.
