Hello Tom -

CA>>>> Linspire is an attempt to commercialize free software
CA>>>> (GNU/Linux) why bother with it?

TW>>> It appears to be a laymans WORKING LINUX system. NOT
TW>>> having to have a Super Geek holding your hand is a
TW>>> botherable situation.

CA>> KNOPPIX is even _more_ of a layman's WORKING LINUX and
CA>> very user friendly from all reports I'm getting.

TW> NOT really until it gives you a CHOICE on the Hard Drive in
TW> addition to running form the Boot CD. NOW running form the
TW> CD can be a timed automatic selecrtion. BUT before it has
TW> any thoughts for filling the needs of the computer unaware
TW> that option must be presented.

KNOPPIX can be installed to the user's hard drive if he/she so
desires. As it is, it is a painless way to experience Linux
without the need to rearrange your existing setups.

TW>>> And overall it can be Cheeper then an equilivent MS
TW>>> computer setup and gives you the satisfacyion of NOT
TW>>> lining the Tyrants Pocket.

CA>> The hardware, Linspire, is inexpensive but KNOPPIX is free
CA>> and Linspire charges $99 per year for access to their
CA>> software.

TW> Again IT is not really a Viable Option. It is strictly a
TW> TOY for the budding LINUG geek right now.

CA>> I find it sad so many rush to make money from programming
CA>> that was done for free by people who will never see a dime
CA>> of that money.

TW> He is simply providins a service for a void in the computer
TW> market. HOW is that different than RedHat or others
TW> charging for somethong that you ay is FREE.

I think RedHat is a vulgar bad joke at the expense of those
programmers who contributed their time to getting GNU/Linux to
where it is today.

TW> You are not paying for ther Operating system you are paying
TW> for the Service that you NEED to use LINUX.

Now that KNOPPIX has arrived (and clones of KNOPPIX) Linspire
is _not_ needed by those who are aware of the KNOPPIX
alternatives.

TW>>> But then the MS propoganda machine is VERY powerfull.

CA>> For the most part M$ ignores Linux.

TW> Actualy in the Server markey they are looking over their
TW> Shoulder. BUT YES in the Home market they hacve nothing to
TW> even be concerned about. That is why I think Linspire is a
TW> good IDEA. IF it would make any inroads it would be
TW> soemthing for them to Worry about. AS would any other
TW> distribution of LINUX that really took the Uniniated Home
TW> Market seriously and put out a REAL Beginners edition.

You insist that KNOPPIX isn't a beginner's Linux but really it
is as much as Windows would be for the uninitiated computer
user. I realize that KNOPPIX didn't configure your modem for
you and you said it wouldn't print on your printer. These are
possible areas that could use some attention but I suspect that
with just a bit of typing on your part the modem and printer
would be functioning.
