Probably Sportster suffering of the problem known as the "pausing bug".
They have to ask USR for a fix, who will change their Eproms, either by
fixing it at the factory or sending an eprom to be changed by the owner
(depends of the model).
In between, the official temporary fix is setting S12=0 on the
sportsters.
Some reported that disabling compression with &K0 will also work.
There follows a more complete explanation, serial number of the models

                                        Update Information
                                        _______________
Information on the "Pause" Issue:
We've received reports from owners of Sportster V.34 modems manufactured
after March, 1996 concerning an intermittent timing condition that
occurs when the modems are being used in a terminal data transmission
mode. Our testing indicates this is a fairly isolated occurrence.
The condition appears to occur only when the modems are being used to
interactively transmit text typed from the keyboard (such as chatting).
The modem may pause during this type of data transmission. Standard data
transfers, using common transfer protocols such as Zmodem, FTP, and HTTP
are not affected.
Our engineers have isolated the condition and determined a software
resolution. We've created an exchange program and chip replacement
program that will resolve the problem for those Sportster owners who
experience it.
Products which we have an update for:
We currently have updates for almost all products affected by this
issue. The only product which we do not have an update or replacement
plan for is the model 1141 (Sportster Voice for Macintosh) modem. U.S.
Robotics is putting forth a priority effort toward a resolution for this
model modem. As soon the update is available for this product, we will
be informing our customer base.
Current Work Around and Update Procedure:
To resolve this problem you may try setting S12=0. If you still
experience the problem fill out the SRO request form below to determine
if you will receive a chip update or establish a product swap. Product
swaps will be reshipped within 24 hours utilizing 2-day shipping.

Code Date Information:
The following chart is a listing of current Supervisor or EPROM dates
for our modems. The chart includes the model number, short description,
and the current supervisor or EPROM date of your modem. The Supervisor
or EPROM Date can be obtained by typing an ATI7 while in
terminal mode of a communications program. ( Examples of programs which
have a terminal mode are QuickLink, Qmodem, Telix, Windows Terminal, and
ProComm Plus ) A sample output is shown below.

first location is on the end flap of the modem box. The second location
depends on whether you have an internal or external modem. If the modem
is internal the barcode will be on the printed circuit board. If the
modem is external the barcode will be on the bottom of the modem. The 7
digit hyphenated number is NOT the serial number. Example: CJE-0268 is
NOT the serial number.

X - These modems can be updated with 5/17/96 firmware but will need to
come in house to be upgraded. The firmware update will resolve the
     pause issue.
In order to obtain the latest firmware revision or get the modem in
house for a firmware update, please provide the information requested
above in the SRO Form and send it to any one listed service contact
points. Once your message is received, we will reply back to you with a
SRO # and shipping instructions.
SPECIAL NOTE: Some products do NOT have SOCKETED EPROM's, therefore the
modem will need to come in house to be updated. To check if your modem
has a SOCKETED EPROM, do the following:
Look on the modem, specifically the PC board, for a SQUARE BROWN socket
containing a small square chip. This chip normally contain the modems
Supervisor/EPROM date (seen in the Ati7 screen output) on a label which
is on the chip. If you only see SOLDERED chips, then the modem WILL have
to come in house to be updated.
To do the above process on an Internal modem you will need to remove the
modem from the CPU (Unless, the modem is visible). Be sure to have the
computer and all peripherals turned off when doing this and to take
grounding precautions.
To do this process with a external modem, you will have to remove the
two screws holding the cover together. Again, be sure to be careful not
to touch components and to be grounded when inspecting both internal and
external modem. If you are unsure if the modem has a SOLDERED or
SOCKETED EPROM, you may want to have a Customer Service Representative
confirm what type of PC Board your product has and what the appropriate
repair method will be necessary.
