My daughter had the same problem. She is now seven. I think the problem
is that they are concentrating too much on each word and missing the
context of the stories. After you are sure that he knows how to read
each word on the page, go back and read the page aloud to him. Maybe
even sentence by sentence. Use a lot of inflection. He has the skill,
now he needs to develop the art. As he learns to read more fluently, you
will notice that his comprehension improves. It worked with my daughter
and I am using the same technique on my five year old son.
