It's a router that includes a switch - 4 or 8 ports, usually.

It won't matter for internet, but it will matter a lot for moving files
between the 2 local machines.
Aside from the convenience, there are a number of caveats about wireless;
- all buildings are different and some locations may not get good signals
- security - without proper configuration, you are vulnerable to at the
least
hijacking (piggybacking) of your internet access and at the worst
letting
an intruder at your hard disks.
I have wireless here but normally all machines are hardwired. I can
unplug my thinkpad from the network, slip in the wifi card, and move
around the house.
