-> Wowee, a boat-tailed grackle- aren't they the huge ones?
->
-> Yep. BIG ole honker. Easily as long as a DYH, but very light in the
-> body. Have a TERRIBLE gleam in their eyes!
I know that terrible gleam- my grey, Nigel, uses it regularly to scare
me silly. The strangest thing about Nigel is that he often looks at you
straight on, as an owl would. Someone on rec.pets.birds said that greys
have eyes set further forward on their heads than other parrots, and
that this is because they are more predatory than other parrots. Nigel
IS really interested in lizards and bugs, while my Amazon, Zigs, is
terrified of them.
-> do was strut in front of that mirror. I've seen wild ones admire
-> themselves in shiny hubcaps by the hour.
I wonder if they actually recognize themselves, or see the reflection as
another bird? Self-recognition is supposed to be an indicator of
intelligence.
-> My wife has a girlfriend who has a Conure that she free flys a lot!
-> That crazy bird thinks she's a tame mockingbird! Never fails to land
-> on her mistress's glove when called. She certainly does some
-> beautiful flying too! Soars and dives and does aerobatics that I
-> could never even attempt in my baby airplane.
That sounds so idyllic, but I do fear for the bird. There's too many
big and hungry things out there. I'm afraid to even take my birds out
on the deck in their cages. I watch them constantly when they're out.
My grey thinks cats are wonderful. Aye!
-> pleasure of knowing Zopolote; thanks for sharing him with us.
->
-> Thanks for listening. All us writers need readers!
And we readers need writers! I confess that I lurk on WRITING and know
you're a writer.  I wish I were. . .
