Actually that was my own conclusion as to why the Republican
Party selected Dole. Clinton was in a formidable position and those
with realistic presidential aspirations really had no desire to run
against an incumbent president. When Dole stepped forward, realizing
his own age probably would preclude him from a 2000 campaign, he
became the rallying point for the party.

Probably ranks just behind Sam Houston in a popularity poll.
He'll pull over 65% in in reelection this year in a state that has a
strong Democratic Party still. Personally I'm not a Bush fan, being a
Libertarian, but he is a powerful politician. The last Texas Governor
with such a strong support base was probably John Connaly.
