CARL BOGARDUS spoke of Re: School System to MATT SMITH on 11-24-96 CB>CB> about too much and never master concepts fully. CB>CB> Since postings are CB>CB> no more CB>CB> than 5-10 posts per day, maybe you can review old postings. CB>CB> On ABC's evening news, the book for a Japanese CB>CB> math course was shown CB>CB> and CB>CB> compared to a U.S. book. The Japanese book CB>CB> looked like it had about CB>CB> 80-100 CB>CB> pages to the U.S. book's 300+ pages. CB> CB> MS> But what about print size, page margins, etc.? CB> MS> Not knowing Japanese, I don't know (and I doubt CB> MS> that the reporter did either) how the book CB> MS> compares to a U.S. counterpart in number of CB> MS> problems, total words, etc. CB>In the Japanese book, about 16 basic concepts were covered, the one CB>U.S. for the had about 45 concepts. The reporter that spoke was CB>U.S. well informed by a group studying math instruction. CB>"Less is more" IE-with fewer concepts to learn, the Japanese students CB>had more time to master them. Typically I think American Math Texts are a few ounces heavier than Japanese Texts as well. This could be due to the fact that American students are stronger physically and can lift the books easier, or it could be due to the fact that there is more weight to the American books. Ever listen to Japanese? It sounds like all their words are stung together too. I think on average it takes 10 American words to translate into the equivalent of 4.5 Japanese words. Im not sure about this because I just made it up but maybe there is some truth in what I said. As for the margins Matt mentioned, I don't think the Japanese use margins in their text....it's the tree thing.....margins are space wasted so ..... There you have it...my unqualified opinion.....and you thought that no one could make less sense than Matt.
