 I'm glad you were not hurt any worse!  No matter how much of a
 gentleman he was, he should not be allowed to drive a car.   
 There should be strict retesting of elderly drivers, every
 few weeks there are articals in the paper where oldsters
 end up driving right through the front glass doors of mini-
 markets while trying to park in front of them.  Just like
 you said they get confused between break and gas pedals.
 A little while ago a old fellow drove a good six isles into
 a thrift drugs.  The TV crew interviwed him and the driver
 was laughing about it as he told his story.  Nobody was 
 killed but it could have ended far worse.
