Hello Tom -

CA>> The OEM CD that fdisk'd and formatted the drive on me was
CA>> for W98. Don't know if that makes a difference or not?

TW> I tried it again with Win98 and it said the same thong when
TW> it looked and didn't find a MS-DOS Boot partition.

TW> For Test 2: I Fdisked the Hard drive but didn't format it.
TW> That gave me a mesage saying "Windows Setup requires
TW> 7340032 bites avaialble on your C: drive" since the Drive
TW> was NOT formatted that didn't supprise me.

TW> For Test 3: I FDisked and Formatted the Drive and put a
TW> couple of gig of Data onit(Music Files becasue they were
TW> convient). This time the install went flawless and the Data
TW> already o nthe Drive was untouched.

TW> I will add at this point that the way I use My CD drive and
TW> install form CD's to have my CD Autorun Truned OFF, I HATE
TW> CD's taking charge and rarchiong off on their Merry way on
TW> me. I also use Start/Run to activate any Setup file.

That one difference apparently changes things a lot. I used the
auto-run bootup from the CD.

TW> I did also try the First two test by allowing the Computer
TW> to BOOT from the Win98 CD I had never tried it that was
TW> before and was supprised that the Routine was Different
TW> slightly.

TW> For Test 1: the CD boot routine detected teh Bare(Un
TW> Fdiskes/Fromatted Drive) and ASKED if I wanted to prepair
TW> it. When I picked YES it FDisked the drive and then called
TW> for a reboot. Upon Reboot it detected that the drive was
TW> unformatted and Formatted it.

As I recall this the _way_ it asks if you want to 'prepare' to
install is a bit misleading - or at least it mislead me.

TW> NOW this is using what I call a Plain Vanala Generic OEM
TW> win98 CD. The king yuo would get from the small computer
TW> store, when buying Hardware OF course!! :-) :-) The Branded
TW> Computer manfacturers mostly use "Special CD's" that have
TW> been customised to their way of doing things so I cannot
TW> speak as to how they might act.

The OEM CDs I used were from HP.
