I _used_ to write software and then give it away. Then I did a
complete rewrite of a set of bulletin board programs and gave
_that_ away for free. A punk grabbed it, renamed it, and began
selling it by claiming it was _better_ than the original (it
was an almost identical set of programs). I had to either stop
improving mine or get used to him profiting by my time/efforts.
I finally stopped work on the BBS software and eventually
stopped giving away _any_ of my work. I eventually lost
interest in programming and seldom do any programming even for
myself.
