Congratulations, Tom!!!
Hey it all starts with just one!
Sometimes it takes them a while to get it right. Some may never raise
more than one.
BTW, the blood chem profile and cultures are expensive but not really
out in left field. Read some of Marge Wissman DVM's articles in the bird
mags. She does some veterinary sleuth work in some of the past articles.
However, having talked to a vet here in Fl named Lee Dukes, he agrees it
is often the male. Like we discussed previously, it is often an internal
problem with the males. Have you tried incubating or fostering if you
are getting fertile eggs?
My macaws raise 4 chicks at a time. They were reknowned for raising two
and you could pull the third. This year they raised three and the white
eyed conures fed the fourth for me for a couple weeks! A great pair of
white eyes: at that time they also raised two of their own, a brown
throat and a dusky conure!
The Red Bellied Macaws also have more fertile eggs than they like to
raise. I am really thinking about incubating with them this year.
Good luck and happy holidays!
