It is unsettling that I don't know whether this behavior is 'guaranteed'
by the standard or just a result of the particular implementation. I have
just spent the day trying to check this, but it all seems to remain cloudy.
I guess I'll just have to get the standard from the library again, and this
time use a photocopier to take some notes.
