The Germans used diesels in aircraft long ago. The Zeppelins used at least 2
large diesels. I saw a documentary about them and they showed the engineer
walking around them while they were in flight. It was a real strange sight
to see. They were also proud of how little noise could be heard from them
within
the passenger areas.
As far as cold goes, the main concern in an aircraft diesel would be the fuel
getting too cold and thickening. Once the engine is heated up and running,
there should be no other problems.
