Concerning _Carl Sagan on UFOs_, Fred Austin said to Troy H. Cheek in UFO:
PA>> Where is the evidence? How can I know that he's telling the truth?
FA>
THC>> But you don't, for instance, say that because you can't test it, it
THC>> doesn't happen.
FA>
FA> Well put, :),
Thanks. :-)
FA> we do take a lot of things in life as "fact", such as black holes, yet
o
FA> one has ever really come face to face with one, though physicists say
they
FA> exist, or theorize. It seems those who be skeptical, have no problems
FA> with
FA> such statements, yet we cannot produce one.
So-called skeptics seem to have two levels of proof: one for "ordinary"
claims and a second for "extraordinary" claims. UFO's fall into the category
of extraordinary claims, and thus require proof that is so compelling that it
can't possibly be ignored or explained away. Unfortunately, no such proof is
available even for ordinary claims. (For example, prove what you had for
breakfast this morning. Pictures can be faked. Your spouse can be lying.
You stomach contents could have been altered.)
It is indeed vexing. Some people would require less evidence to convict you
of murder than to be convinced that you saw a UFO. (And I don't necessarily
mean an alien spacecraft. I mean just to convince them that what you saw
wasn't just a misidentified mundane object.)
