BS> JS> 0.0 is the absolute minimum. :-) Go for 5.0 if you want, that's a
BS> JS> lot safer, especially if you are starting with magnum primers.
hat's
BS> JS> within .2gr of the start charge for a 155gr bullet with N320 and a
BS> JS> magnum primer, according to VV.
BS>Sounds like a good starting point. Want to start as low as I can, without
BS>having to ruin a cleaning rod getting a lodged bullet out of the barrel.
It's standard procedure to use the start load for the next heavier bullet
listed in the loading guide. Such as if I wanted to load a 245gr bullet
for a .375H&H. There is no load for that in manual "a", just loads for
270gr and 235gr. So I'd used the data for the 270gr. Even then, you
have to make sure that a strange bullet design does not make the bullet
longer than that 270gr, thus lessening the internal capacity.
BS> JS> Or "stump neck". :_)
BS>Ouch. . . :^)
You've got to keep in mind this is a very real possibility when working
with maximum or untested loads.
BS> JS> Leather gloves, eye protection, even a face shield for the first 25

BS> JS> so rounds would not be a bad idea.
BS>Maybe I should duct-tape it to the side of the bench, and tie a string to
the
BS>trigger. :^)
If you can provide an acceptable way of fastening the gun to the table,
this is _not_ a bad idea. Tends to freak out the range officers & other
shooters if you are at a range though. Leather jacket and gloves, eye
protection, and shut your eyes hard when you drop the hammer the first
few times. After aiming downrange of course... :-)
BS> BS>> Had feed problems with over-length (1.138) rounds
BS> JS> Did you taper crimp them well?
BS>Yep, just didn't seat them quite deep enough for my Glock. My brother's
BS>Glock, which has several thousand more rounds through it, seemed to like
them
BS>and he liked the free ammo.
Remember- the chamber is not going to be like a cylinder to 1.135" in,
it's going to start tapering in well before that, so it you use something
more like a wadcutter than a round nose, you'll run into problems.
BS> JS> Were those Midway's 180gr SWC's? They have a giant nose. National
BS> JS> Bullet's SWC's are much more like a cone profile.
BS>Can't remember who made them, got a box of 500 at the local gun shop.
hey
BS>look to be shaped like a flat-topped hemisphere.
Truncated 'cone'. Truncated ball I call those. National sells those in
140gr. I bought 500 of the copper plated for the purpose of loading them
quite light (800 fps) for beginning shooters, and for general
noisemaking. 4.5gr of AA#2i was the load I think...
BS>Haven't thought much about hte various bottle-neck cartridges available
these
BS>days. Keep us posted on how they work out for you.
I'm going to go with Bar-Sto if they ever come through. HK is too much
of a pain to work with on stuff like this.
BS>I've been wanting a longer barrel for my Glock 23, to get MagnaPorted. Did
se
BS>someone offering a Glock barrel with an integral comp for $150, might have
to
BS>get one, once I remember which magazine the ad was in. Might fix that
BS>"unsupported case head" problem I've heard about.
It just might. I'm not too partial to using comps, I'm a 'limited' type
of guy. The more powder you have in the load, the better the comp is
going to work though. So you go to slower burning powders if you want
more gas running through the comp., faster if you want less. There's a
guy who shoots unlimited with a Para-Ord chambered in 9x25 dillon: a 10mm
case necked down to 9mm. He loads about 18 grains of powder, it's the
first pistol I ever shot that recoils downwards. And man is the muzzle
blast from that thing _wicked_.
