The male Betta can be as agressive as you cichlids and will look at small
community fish as a threat. Bettas & Angels love to eat Harlequin Rasboras.
How about a small "show tank" for the Betta inside your aquarium?  I too
switched from cichlids to tetras, etc.  I look for unusual or hard to get
species, but also like the standards. If your tank is "very, very well
established" then neons and cardinals make for great colorful schoolers. I
also enjoy Bloodfins and Red Eye Tetras which are very playful in numbers of
6+.  Very interesting are Paraguayan 3 Dot Tetras which are about 1" fully
grown but have interesting dark Navy Blue markings.
