Both of our batteries, the spare also, were no good anymore. I think they

Hi Beth,

Thanks for confirming what I suspected was Steven's problem.
I believe that to keep Lithium-ion batteries operational longer the best 
practice is to actually discharge them almost fully, on a regular basis.
