Overload is not a problem endemic to 2 conversion receivers - it is a problem
of using "bipolar" (NPN or PNP) transistors in the RF stages. If you use
FETs there it will have a better chance of not overloading.
And even image rejection - which is what you mean - I think - should not be a
problem in a well designed 2 conversion radio. The problem that you have is
that the high IF isn't high enough and selective enough.
Manufacturers make products that they think will sell. Sometimes "good
enough" is what is necessary.
