Very possible...oh yeah....best to buy a 16 channel S/PDIF interface (PCI) 
with an optic link to a seperate 16 channel AD/DA converter....SCSI-drive is 
also important (be smart, have a JAZ-drive).
S/PDIF 16ch digital I/O is about DFl 1200,- (approx $600,-)
also you can buy additional multi-fx-processor plug-in cards
16ch AD-DA conv is about DFl 6000,- (approx $ 3000,-)
OTOH...you could buy a 12 channel digital JAZ-drive recorder (mixer included) 
for DFl 3500,- ($1750,-)
