It appears I've found the solution, though -- the latest 4.07 beta writes out
the player data before displaying the  prompt.

Unfortunately this version also checks to see if a player is "on
now" before
letting them on -- bad if you experience frequent disconnects. This problem 
is
a bit easier to deal with than unkillable players, however.
