Paul,

Just thought I'd keep you abreast of my logon results.

 PE> Paul,

PE> PE> Could you do me a favour and log on to the Dick Smith
PE> PE> Electronics BBS and try downloading a file, and tell me
PE> PE> what CPS rate you get. The number is 878-1146. BFN.

 PE> Done.

 PE> Requested 4 files:

 PE> BBSALL.LZH 87K
 PE> BBSFALL.LZH 82K
 PE> LHA213.EXE 70K
 PE> F3FIX1.ZIP. 30K

PE> The interesting thing is when I was downloading the first
 PE> file
 PE> (BBSALL.LZH), I was getting a transfer rate of 520CPS. Then
 PE> I aborted
PE> the transfer, and restarted it, and the average CPS rate
 PE> jumped to
 PE> 1077CPS !!.

 BD> certainly is odd...

PE> So I again aborted the transfer, deleted the remnants of
 PE> this file,
PE> because Zmodem auto recovers, and started it again. >1000CPS
 PE> again.

PE> The remaining files also transferred at 1080CPS.

PE> I also logged on to 2000 & Beyond BBS, and transferred a
 PE> 350K file, and
PE> though I had an exteremly noisey line (about 50 CRC errors),
 PE> the average
PE> transfer rate was around 860 CPS.

PE> This was one-time transfer, not aborted in any way.

 PE> Does this help ?

BD> yes, to some extent, I'd think it likely you are calling
 BD> the horrible old Multi-Tech Multi-Modem V32 MT92EAB on
BD> line 1, 887-2276, rather than one of the two great newer
BD> Spirit II's I have on rotary on 878-1146 (listed under
 BD> 3:711/932 as well)

BD> Please note the old modem on line 1 887-2276 was free, we do not sell
BD> it! we got it from MBE for nothing for use on the BBS, on semi-
BD> permanent loan. I hope to replace it one day, but since
BD> Ineed 300/300 and 1200/75, and this old thing works (just)
BD> on these rates, I have a couple of choices...

 BD> (1) a third Spirit II .... good, but no 300/300, 1200/75
 BD> (2) an old 1234 .... good, but no 9600
 BD> (3) the old MT932EAB .... OK... but BTLZ (no V.42bis), buggy MNP4 but
BD> it does at least have 300/300, 1200/75 and goes
BD> to 9600 even if you can't have MNP

BD> I have messages in the logon screen with the DSE logo, and in the news
BD> bulletins about the sad state of affairs of line 1 as to
BD> it's inability to cop with EC of any sort MNP(n) or
BD> V.42(bis), have turned them off, and no one reads them...
BD> :-) now if this is not it, please tell me the line you called.

Bob,

Well, it seems after scanning through some old packets, I've
found the message. I missed it because it wasn't addressed to me.

Anyway, the line I called to get those 4 above mentioned files
was 878-1146.

This evening (4 Aug), I attempted to download another two files,
and got immediate 1070+ CPS rates. I beleive that the
Maestro-Spirit problem is somewhat intermittant, so I will try
again on various occasions and let you know of the results.

I also logged on the the Sentry's Shadow, and intially d-loaded a
file, and the transfer rate was 520CPS, then after about 10
seconds it climbed above 1000 CPS. I tried another file, but
couldn't duplicate the same result, and ended up getting a
sustained throughput of 1070CPS.

Regards

Dieter
