I seem to recall that when you select contents when editing a custom box that 
there is a choice of image and image on disk. I can't check if there is any 
difference as the hard drive just died in my non-BBS machine and as such have 
no WP.
The amount of space your images are using does however seem rather excessive 
to me. I have a friend who makes 1200dpi full colour scans that are only 
about that size.
