I may have stumbled upon the Silver Bullet to solve the problems
some have encountered uploading files and mail to nfbnet.org over
the internet.
When you telnet to nfbnet, ensure you have the 8 bit data path
and no escape code options set.
e.g.
if you have a shell account, type
telnet -8 -E nfbnet.org
That is dash 8 and dash capital E which request an 8 bit data
path and tells telnet to ignore the usual escape character, in
fact, all escape characters, respectively.
If you use client software, check the documentation on it as to
how to specify these options.
I found at times i was being given a Telnet command prompt when I
tried an upload and it dawned on me that perhaps telnet was
picking up a chaaracter in the file I was uploading as one of its
escape characters which was doing bizarre things to my upload.
Since specifying the -8 and -E options of telnet, I have found my
upload success rate has soared.
So try it and see if it works for you. I have had fairly good
success with these characters using both x-modem with relaxed
timing and z-modem file transfers.
Let me know if this helps.
Using telnet connections will really help keep your toll bills
down!
