LP> I am in Ontario. They say that you shouldn't plant until the Victoria
LP>Day weekend (May 19th, this year), but we can still get night frosts and
LP>temps in the low 20's celcius, don't know what that is in F. If I wait
LP>until then, though, I don't get any peas! And I do love peas! I haven't
LP>gotten any into the house the past few years, because I eat them all in
he
LP>garden! :) Oh well, I've just got to learn to plant more!
Lisa, young peas are frost hardy. Plant as soon as you can work the
ground - March if you can, except for Green Arrow. (They like warmer
germination than other peas.) Other cultivars that like it cool for
growing are carrots, beets, swiss chard, poppies (all kinds), dill,
fennel, ettc. All of these can be planted 2-4 weeks before the
official frost-free date in this area (which is the 24th of May,
regardless of when the Queen celebrates her birthday. :-))
For years I planted peas just as a fresh garden treat, like, REALLY
fresh. Few ever came in the house. :-)
LP> Your Bay should grow well in a container. Unfortunately, I can't give
ou
LP>any tips on growing them. I kill them, along with rosemary (I killed
LP>another one, if you're reading Kat). At least I have something to strive
for
My tiny Bay sent out 3 new large leaves in the last couple of weeks.
It is responding to increased day length and can now handle more
watering and a bit of soluble fertilizer. Other than removing it from
the window on extremely cold nights (about a half dozen times this
winter), and watering it (sometimes with old weak tea), that's all the
care it has gotten.
