subject: L1089s in LINK386

One day the revolution will come, and all the UNIX
people will be dealt with by a Committee of the People.
I shall begin devising tortures for them far in excess of
simply having to use their own OS throughout eternity.

Remember that L1089 error I was having on LINK386
under Warp? Well, it happens under v2.11, too. In fact,
Tue., I spent the day feeding tapes and CDs into my
machine. Reinstalled v2.11. Finally, from CD, v2.1. Also
reinstalled C Set ++ twice.

icc does not have a whole lot of steps. you fire off the
command line and icc goes to work. it must pipe or save
the response file for LINK386. the cryptic error message
says it "can't be found on e:". Well, in e:\tmp, there is
nothing lying around...after compiles failed, even under v2.1
fresh from CD, where i KNOW they once worked, i started
looking for this response file.

the first thought was that maybe the TMP environment variable
was set wrong. a scan of CONFIG.SYS revealed that there were
two SET TMP=E:\TMP lines, one for C Set ++ and one for the
Hobbes OS/2 emacs port. ooops! the final one was SET TMP=
E:/TMP...

i don't think i'll be using emacs for awhile. those who use the
Hobbes unix-y utilities, which are nice sometimes, should
beware this mess.
