That statement is really irritating, David.
Spaces have a very important and specific use as THE delimiting
separator of command line parameters for all kinds of utility programs;
and when you try to pipe and call these in a chain, and some of the
programs derive filenames from other sources than your quoted strings,
you have a real mess real soon, without being stupid or pissy about
quotes.
The same problems apply, most specifically to/within OS/2, with the use
of multiple periods in filenames.
