Are they using Couriers or Sportsters?  Some Sportsters have a bug that 
causes them to freeze during a connection (even with other USRs).  I seem to 
remember USR issued a recall for them, but I didn't pay that much attention 
as I don't use a Sportster. :) You might want to ask over on the USR Modems 
echo though.
