Yes - if one of the streams doesnt negotiate 8bit binary mode.

So if you have:

 A B B C

So "B" is both a client and a server (or a server running a client telnet).

If "C" says "lets go binary", the "B client" probably says "OK", but it
probably doesnt tell the "B server" to negotiate binary mode with "A".
