Before I got a "black box" router/switch, I used a separate computer
running InJoy as a router/firewall, but my understanding from the Injoy
docs. was that the computer on which Injoy is running still has little
protection: only the computers "beyond" that machine are protected fully.

The "black box" routers are much more efficient than my old 486/66 too,
with enormously improved throughput, far lower power consumption, more
compact, and don't need an extra OS/2 license.
