I had this noise too. Try smoothing out the HD-acces. This caused the noise 
overhere. When reading from disc, the voice-playing was disrupted and static 
noise sounded.
Try another FOSSIL driver, try recording in another voice format (I used AD2 
and that worked fine).
With the U1496E+ I tried every ZFAX version that was released and I found 
v3.12 the most reliable with voice/fax/data-shelling. Try v3.12.
Oh, I have rom v6.11a in my U1496E+
