CG>Reeves, Eglinton just East of Royal York Road, next time you're
CG>in town!
I'm not in Toronto very often; mostly, once or twice a year I whiz
through on my place to somewhere else. :-)
CG>I've never thought of going to a Plant World store (in quiet
CG>hours) for advice, but it makes sense. They know that I will be
I rarely visit greenhouses, although they are high on my list of
Places to be Seen. Mostly it's because I can't stand to see all those
gorgeous plants just calling my name, and knowing I have no room for
  them. (If I don't see them, I can't hear them. )
I am also an information junkie,; so maintain an extensive library,
with lots of (organic) gardening books and encyclopedias. Usually I
can find almost anything by name; it's the pictures that are so
time-consuming to find and compare, if at all possible. And common
names, as you found out, are close to useless, since they can apply to
maybe dozens of different plants. Ever see a Creeping Charlie? :-)
CG>I suppose too that an expert botanical person gets just as big a
CG>thrill out of helping me as I do in helping a new computer user.
The semi-expert might. Most salespeople in flower sections of other
stores know very little; they parrot word for word what the info sheet
says, and haven't a clue when you mention an unfamiliar plant. Nor do
they know where to look for answers.
