Happy New Year!
-> Well, we're near a hundred miles inland from the Island, but
-> Brownsburg of course, is close. You really wouldn't want to miss our
-> botannical garden birdwatching anyway. (Orioles, Kiskadees,
-> green-jays, and more wild finches that you can shake a stick at.)
Sounds incredibly nice- I'm a sucker for semi-tropical places. BIrds,
birds, birds!
-> There is a local group dedicated to keeping track of the nest sites
-> and roosting grounds. Headed up by a local TV personality we get
-> regular information about how things are progressing.
Wow- bird news on tv. Sounds like the parrots have friends, at least.
-> His position is that since his ancestors reported local flocks of
-> both conures and Mexican redheads that they ARE a native bird and
-> should be given the protection afforded protected species. So far no
-> joy from local governments. Opponents insist that all these birds
-> are ferile releases, and/or escapees, and that they should be fair
-> game for people with "Cherry Pickers" to capture. Makes my blood
-> boil! (I owned a cherry picker for many years and if I'd caught any
-> of MY employees taking parrot chicks he'd have been fired before he
-> hit the ground!)
Fascinating, but it's strange that there's debate on whether the parrots
are native or not. Seems like it would be a factual question. . . The
fact that they are able to survive on their own, and are living in one
of the few places in the country where they COULD survive seems to me
enough reason to protect them.
Also, the fact that they ARE surviving despite people taking some
chicks is really wonderful. Birds can be remarkably adaptable. Saw a
big flock of seagulls in a strip mall parking lot tonight- they were
eating at McDonalds and drinking from water puddles in the parking lot.
Sounds like you and my husband would get along- he loves cherry pickers
and whatnot.
-> with it in her inimitable fashion. I can't believe yours actually
-> mimicked that blasted racket.
->
-> The Yellow Cheek mimicked EVERYTHING! (Except ME!)
-> Well, I'm NOT looking to buy another Yellow Cheek! I swear I truly
-> believe they're LOUDER ounce for ounce than a PAIR of YHA. (And I've
-> heard some LOUD Yellow Heads!)
Good grief. I've occasionally thought about getting a mate for my horny
little DYH hen, Zigs, but the very thought of TWO of them doing their
sunset screams makes my ears hurt. It would be interesting to learn
which Amazons are quiet. The Lilac Crowns, huh, in your
experience? I've never known a quiet one.
Well, back to the New Year's festivities.
