Welp, pardner, for everyones sake I hope it isn't simply an 'agreement
to begin to think about beginning to agree' on whos' standards the modem
mfgrs decide to include in this thing called V.pcm.
I'll play the optimist role and hope something really constructive is
reached at this Jan. meeting of the ITU. All the V.pcm players have to
agree on a preliminary or determined set of standards then before any
shape, form, or fashion of an official standard can be set.
I imagine it will be similar to the V.34; you'll have each modem mfgr
eventually meeting the ITU set standard (whenever that may be rached)
with a little of their own flavor or subsets or implementations. USR's
V.34+ or 33.6 variation on V.34 is a good example of what may evolve.
I have three x2 Couriers and one Hayes K56Flex ready for a standard.
I'd sure give the so called "standards-based" modems that are reported
to be hitting the market soon after the Jan. ITU meeting a wide berth.
Some folks are bound to get upset when they have to return their new
modem for the official ITU standard upgrade to V.pcm.
...thank technology for flash rom capabilities...
Later...
Rick
