What does the printer's manual say about its emulations (if any) and
driver options? What's the closest supported NEC printer to yours?
Do you have the printer manual and does it give you all the printer
codes for things like underlining? If so, you may be able to choose
a printer close to yours, then use the Printer program to edit those
parts of the printer definition. (I had to build the definition for
my first printer pretty much from scratch.)

That should only act as a buffer, increasing the amount of data the
printer can store for printing. It shouldn't affect whether or not
you can get the printer to do certain things.
