If you take poor quality (low nutrient) dirt and flood it, you get erosion
with no improvement in quality. I haven't seen the figures in a long time,
but one tonne of wheat requires a large amount of fertiliser (which causes
long-term damage to the soil), and the farming causes a large amount of
soil to blow away.

Adding water to the inland of Australia will not significantly feed humans.
