another question, though, is what is the BBS using to zip with and are those
zip parameters correct?

then there's the question of the zip file's size... if the BBS is older, it may
have a limit on the size of the zip file... depending on the number of messages
the system selected to pack for you, this may have driven the size of the zip
over the limit...
