ZZ> > this is highly relevent even to OS/2, which does > have it's share of virus problems as well. ZZ> We had this thread years ago in the FIDONET VIRUS echo. It's actually quite difficult to write an OS/2 virus. OS/2 programs cannot self-modify their code. Running executables and DLLs cannot be written to whilst they are in use (which eliminates the possibility of infecting PMMERGE.DLL, for example). It's not possible to access an active partition at low level (and the boot partition is *always* active). It's almost impossible to stay resident and remain undetected, as the process and thread would show up in a process listing. And with HPFS it's a lot more difficult to locate files physically on the disc. We came to the conclusion that an OS/2 virus would need to be so big that it would be obvious to the naked eye, and would be too great a technical challenge for a virus writer. Even DOS viruses have a hard time, since VDMs have this nasty habit of disappearing completely when you are finished with them (making Terminate and Stay Resident practically useless for a virus), and they don't share common global memory amongst themselves for viruses to lurk in. > JdeBP < ___ X MegaMail 2.10 #0: --- Maximus/2 2.02* Origin: DoNoR/2,Woking UK (01483-725167) (2:440/4) SEEN-BY: 12/2442 54/54 620/243 624/50 632/348 640/820 690/660 711/409 410 413 SEEN-BY: 711/430 807 808 809 934 942 949 712/353 623 713/888 800/1 @PATH: 440/4 141/209 270/101 396/1 3615/50 229/2 12/2442 711/409 54/54 @PATH: 711/808 809 934 |
