But both HP and Compaq have been playing the proprietary game for quite
some time now...

The one windoze box I have here is a Compaq,  and I have *no* idea how I'm
ever likely to get that hardware running linux and taking advantage of all
the built-in stuff -- the SCSI host adapter (on the MB),  the sound and
video hardware (also on the MB),  etc.  I'm planning to upgrade that
machine anyhow, replacing it with something newer,  so I'm not too worried
about it.
