From: "Jim Adams" I'm used to reading these posts first thing in th morning at work. Unfortunately, I can't connect to the news server there. Probably something to do with the firewall. since security is handled by another section I'm reluctant to ask them for access. Only been there a month. I'll have to follow this from home where I'm using Outlook Express. There must be something better. Think I mentioned my old organization had become a snake pit. Was willing to go almost anywhere. Where I landed is the Internation Broadcasting Bureau- VOA, Radio Marti, etc. A bit like working in the Tower of Babel. In the halls and elevators one hears many tongues. Work-wise a bit of a change. This is a 24/7 organization. There doing some things I've never worked on. A lot of on-line storage. All audio is done digitally. They are now working to switch the all video to digital. Also, a lot more servers than I'm used to working with. Lots more. It's nice though not to be a one-man band. There are two other UNIX admins. Think I'll be able to learn a lot. Some other changes. My boss here comes from the network end of the spectrum. Couldn't believe when the first week I was there he was consoled into a SAN. I had never seen my previous boss logged into anything execpt his desktop PC - and hewas the head of the network and systems branch. Another change. We do maintenance onece a month - in the wee hours of the morning. Think coming in at 10 or 11 Saturday and working until 4 or 5 a.m. In the previous job maintenance was done also one Sunday a month from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. In six years there never once was anyone from mangament present during maintenance. I get to IBB for maintenance and my boss is on the first floor with one of the guys replacing some Cisco equipment. I was amazed. Another change is that now I have a private office. First time in 10 years (see binaries for pics). It's nice to be able to have private phone conversations and play CDs but I miss the company. Also, if you have a question you have to call the person, something I am loathe to do (hate the phone), or walk down the hall to someone's office. I'm used to just looking up from station - if the person is there and not busy you ask the question. I'll try to keep up from home with you all. Take care. -- Jim Adams --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
