 How do, Tom?

JB> Just that I heard 10.0 (At least their "Community"
release.) was a little
JB>dogged, and I too found a number of "Bombs" dropped when I
was running it.
 JB> [...]
JB> I'm no authority though, so you'd have to look elsewhere for further
 JB>recommendations.

TW> I have tried several releases of KNOPPIX. My first couple of trys
TW> were disasters. But very revent;ly I did get 3.4 to print form a
TW> printer. Haven't tried a Internet connect yet.

There can be some issues with printing engines. (Not sure what term to use.)

TW> But it seems that it is still quite convoluted to get things working.
TW> It seemed like the Printer instal shound have been far easier as an
TW> example. Yuo really had to hunt arround and there were too many steps.
TW> AFTER all the Printer was identified correctly. WHY all the additional
TW> steps after you mark the Identy as correct?

As little as I know, most of it has to do with the Post Script, or
directly-to-port camps. If you need to do graphical printing, you need to
transmit the PS code, and of course have a printer to make sense of them.
If you only need a line printer, you can use the lp suite of tools. I know
it seems like a quagmire at times, but remember the OS was built ad-hock,
and choices are ever present with whatever task you need to do. I just read
that Harry Poter was made on Linux, so there's that too.

TW> Shouldn't it charge ahead and install the driver??
TW> Of course I have installed Windows on quite a few machine but
TW> installing a printer should be "Rocket Scientist" stuff.

No, it *shouldn't* be rocket science. (Read above }|-)

Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) should handle your chores, but does open
a web portal for outside attacks from what I've heard. The bottom line, is
I do not posses enough info on the OS to offer many sollutions, and my
understanding of it, while growing, is pretty miniscule.

... I'll TTYL, Tom. James
